Upgrades are now percentage based mostly, so adding 10% damage favors the elite unit that already deals more damage, kinda ruining the custom units in my opinion. They also added a small chance for shields to block missiles from the front and left. You can also use your HP pool to tank missile fire and close lines without casualties. Two units might be shooting arrows at eachother for a while, without taking almost any casualties, then one sides units will start to tun out of hp and suddenly 50 men will be killed off per volley. The issues with a system like this are that it dramatically stretches how powerful a good unit is, by keeping its troops all fighting as it takes damge and that units seem immortal, until they all die. Units now have varrying HP pools, usually around 55.

It can hit a target with 100 armor, which now would give a 75%(? I forget the amount) chance for the arrow to deal only its armor piercing damage, and a 25% chancd to deal all of its damage. Now an arrow might deal 4 AP damage and 12 normal damage. The newer system is similar to the old one with changes mainly in armor, damage, and HP. Not a huge deal for an elite samurai, but a big deal for a peasant archer unit that normally would be terrible in melee. In the old games, upgrades were raw, like building a unit in a speciffic province added 4 melee attack. One complaint about the system is that battles were over too fast. So a lucky arrow, or a lucky blow can kill even an elite warrior. The biggest difference is that in the old games almost every unit has 1 hp. How this plays out is as follows: Armor improves your mele defense value a little, and exponentially improves your defense against arrows/slings/non-gunpowder missiles. The core of the old mechanics are morale, attack, defense, armor, hp, speed, accuracy, bonus vs large, and reload speed. Think we missed one?
